Stones of the Peak District
Paintings reflecting the edventure of the peak district, with it's folded hills and enigmatic circles. |
People Series two
Taking the high-energy approach of the first people series, and adding both technical and narrative elements. Each painting forms an element within a story, which the viewer may extrapolate both foward and backward from that instant. |
People Series One
Concentrating on the movement and life-energy within people, a series of abstracted figures none-the-less based firmly on a life-drawing background. |
Doorways in Time
Exploring the doorway as a metaphor for the moment of change and transition in a life, these paintings show life situations at the crossroads. From the humorous to the sombre, the paintings explore the instant when an opportunity is open or closed. Sometimes all we see if a possibility before we walk away; other doors we must pass through beyond our own volition. This series is layered with meanings; some surface and easily read, other more symbolic and covert. An old door closes, a new one opens. |
Landscape Closeups
The brooding coastline of Ravensglass in winter forms the inspiration for this series of works. Produced from a mixture of photos and sketches made on site, they seek to recapture the atmosphere as much as the detail of the location. The close-up approach captures the immediacy of a winter walk rather than the distant view as would be seen through the window of a building or a car. |
Thematic exercises
Many of these pieces were produced in response to classic pieces of art, seeking to re-interpret either a technique or a meaning gleaned from a master artist. With some it is an impulse or an emotion to be explored, others a palette or a geometry. In each case, the encounter with the work of the master artist has suggested a way of seeing the world. A set of tributes to masters.
